Melbourne Tow A Way Zones - VIC ROADS

Keeping Melbourne Moving - tow-away zones

As part of the Government’s $112.7 million Keeping Melbourne Moving congestion plan, VicRoads is delivering stronger enforcement of clearways on arterial roads, including standardised and extended clearway times and the expanded use of tow-away zones.

This means if you park in a clearway during restricted times your vehicle could be towed away.

Clearways
Some main roads have considerably more traffic during peak hours and these roads have been designated as clearways. A clearway indicates a section of road where parking and stopping is strictly prohibited for given times indicated by the clearway sign.

Vehicles parked in the extended clearway zones during the restricted times will be towed away to ensure a free flow of traffic and the safety of other road users.

Changes to tow-away zones
New clearway times and tow-away zones on arterial roads are being implemented within the 10km radius of Melbourne CBD. AM clearway times are the first to be put in place.

The remaining changes to clearway times will follow during 2009. Roads where the changes have already been implemented can be searched by municipality. See Roads affected by clearways, by municipality

Costs/fees*
If you park in a clearway during restricted times and your vehicle is towed away the fees include*:
  • $322 release fee if your vehicle has been towed
  • If you do not collect your vehicle within 4 days a $12.90 storage fee for each day following that until collection.

Impound storage yard
If your vehicle has been towed you must visit the impound yard to collect it.

The secure storage yard is located at 34 Cromwell Street, Collingwood (Melways reference 2C G12). The yard is open from 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. It is also close to tram and train lines.

To arrange collection of your vehicle contact the impound yard on  03 9894 0001
Further Information**

* Figures as at 9 January 2009.
**The City of Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip will continue to undertake the arrangements in their municipalities. Contact them directly to discuss their towing arrangements.
